Located in the heart of the Andaman Sea, Phuket is Thailand’s largest island and fondly referred to as the ‘Pearl of the Andaman.’
Pansea Beach, one of Phuket’s hidden gems is situated on the island’s west coast.
There is only one other luxury resort which shares the secluded bay with its crystal clear turquoise waters and pristine white sand with exclusive direct access for hotel residents.
Established in 1982, the hotel that is now known as The Surin was one of the first luxury hotels on Phuket, which was relatively quiet and undiscovered at that time. Due to its stunning location on Pansea Beach, the hotel was originally referred to as “The Pansea”. However, over the years, The Surin Phuket has been refreshed and reawakened under the careful guidance of renowned American architect, Ed Tuttle.
The Paris-based architect and designer maintains respect for both the local culture and his own architectural philosophy by ensuring that wherever one looks throughout the resort, and interesting perspective can be seen. His intuitive vision continues to ensure that our hotel remains the timeless and elegant hideaway that it was conceptualized to be.
Guests can expect an unpretentious yet sophisticated ambiance complemented by high service standards against the unspoiled, lush backdrop that has remained unchanged through the years.
Conceived in 1982, The Pansea was an early pioneer in bringing a new level of luxury to the exotic island of Phuket. The island was relatively quiet and undiscovered at that time, and the location of the resort was beyond appealing.
The Pansea received its namesake from its location. The hotel was situated along the white sands of the beach, backed by verdant jungle and boasting views across the Andaman Sea. In those days, the hotel only had electricity for a few hours a day, but back then, it was a real luxury.
In 1995, Paris-based architect, Edward Tuttle, was commissioned to breathe new life into The Pansea Hotel. During this phase, The hotel’s accommodations and grounds were given an upgrade and the resort was given a new name, The Chedi.
The architect has a keen eye and maintains respect for both the local culture and his own architectural philosophy by ensuring that wherever one looks, an interesting perspective can be seen. His intuitive vision has ensured that with each facelift of the property, the resort remains the timeless and classically elegant hideaway it was conceptualized to be.
The Surin Phuket came into being in 2011. Once again revitalized under the careful guidance of renowned American architect, Edward Tuttle.
The architect combined local materials and traditional Thai designs with modern functionality. All of the roofs of The Surin Phuket have been fitted with sustainable cedar shingles. These geometric forms are contrasted by the naturally irregular shapes of the surrounding tropical palms, shrubs and rocks.
Another unique characteristic of the resort is that during its transformations, there has never been an elevator installed. Instead, there are a series of stairs and walkways that connect the resort. The stairs and walkways allow guests to meander through the lush tropical foliage while enjoying the nature that surrounds the resort.
Elements of Western design can also be found throughout the resort, especially in the choice of a herringbone floor pattern for the library and the restaurant’s dramatic lighting. The restaurant’s umbrella-shaped ceiling is made from wood, but the floors and walls are made out of grey granite, as are the steps which lead to the hexagonal pool. Lustrous black anthracite, the hardest of all coals, makes up the pool’s tiling and creates dramatic reflections at night. Stark contrasts like these are visibly stunning and add to overall grandeur of The Surin Phuket.
